  1. V. Smolensky Sacred Music Festival

REGULATIONS

 

  1. General provisions

1.1 The S. V. Smolensky Sacred Music Festival (hereafter Festival) is a part of the Open Festival of Choral Music named after Stepan Vasilievich Smolensky.

1.2 The Festival is devoted to the remarkable national worker of culture, musicologist, palaeographer, choral conductor, pedagogue, graduate of the Kazan Imperial University from the class of 1872, Stepan Vasilievich Smolensky (1848-1909).

1.3 The Festival represents an open competition and festival for professional, student, and amateur choirs and ensembles.

1.4 The scientific conference, entitled “Readings In Memory of S.V. Smolensky. The Singing culture of Russia: XIX – XXI centuries”, is held in the framework of the Festival.

 

  1. Tasks and Objectives of the Festival

2.1 The objective of the Festival – to promote ethical and moral traditions of the peoples living in the Republic of Tatarstan, and to stimulate professional and artistic development of the vocal and choral music groups of different performance practices.

2.2 Tasks of the Festival:

- strengthening international and interethnic connections;

- bringing the moral and aesthetical upbringing of the modern youth up to standard;

- promotion of the best examples of the sacred an folk music, Russian national and international classical sacred music, as well as choral compositions of the XX-XXI centuries;

- development of the classical vocal and choral genres;

- identifying talented vocal and choral groups;

- strengthening artistic ties between the music groups;

- improving the professional level of the choral conductors, choirmasters,

singers and accompanists.

 

  1. Procedure of the Festival

3.1 The Festival is held in the following categories:

- classical performance (choir, ensembles);

- folk performance (choir, ensembles).

3.2 Choir and ensembles can take part in the competition and/or in the concerts organized by the Festival.  

 

  1. Conditions for Participation in the Competition

4.1. The following are eligible for participation in the competition:

- church choirs and ensembles;

- student choirs and ensembles;

- amateur choirs and ensembles;

4.2. Groups of contestants must have the possibility to take part in the Gala-concert and can take part in the concert-meetings in the framework of the Festival and according with the schedule of the Festival. 

4.3. The schedule of concerts of the participating vocal groups is arranged by the Organizing Committee after all the applications have been received. 

 

  1. Competition Program Requirements

5.1 The program of the group should comply with the objectives and tasks of the Festival. 

5.2 The program should be no less than 8 minutes and no longer than 15 minutes of actual time.

5.3 The program should include music of different genres. 

5.4 The program must contain a piece of sacred music, or a patriotic song; or a Russian classical sacred music piece. 

5.5 Choral performance without accompaniment is an obligatory requirement for the group to participate in the competition. The minimum amount of pieces without accompaniment is one per program. It is possible that the whole program is performed without accompaniment/a cappella.

5.6 It is not permitted to perform with a recorded accompaniment (full or partial).

5.7 It is not allowed to perform the following sacred texts: «World’s Mercy», «We Sing to You», «Cherub’s Song».

5.8 Programs performed for the competition and concert should not overlap. 

 

  1. Jury Regulations

6.1. The composition of the jury is decided by the Organizing Committee of the Festival. The jury is composed of professional choirmasters, high schools and higher music training institutions.

6.2. The Jury evaluates performances of the contestants according to the 10 point system; the points of each jury member are summed up to determine the final score.

6.3. The evaluation criteria:

  • Clarity of intonation and quality of sound;
  • Musicality, artistic interpretation of the piece;
  • Compliance of the program to the artistic criteria;
  • Performance mastery;
  • Stage presence;
  • General impression.

6.4. In accordance with the results of the auditions of the competition, the contestants are awarded prizes and diplomas of the I, II, and III degree.

6.5. The Jury has the right not to award all of the prizes, divide prizes among the participants, and award additional diplomas: 

  • «For the Best Performance of Sacred Music »
  • «For the Best Performance of Russian Sacred Music»
  • «For the Best Performance of a Piece by a Composer from the Middle Volga Region»
  • «For the Best Performance of a Folk Song»
  • «For the Best Performance of a Western European Classic»
  • «For the Best Performance of a Piece by a Composer of XX-XXI centuries»

6.6. The decision of the Jury is final and not subject to revision.

 

  1. Financial Conditions for the Participants of the Competition

7.1. Participation fee is paid by each participant choral group upon arrival at registration. The amount of the fee depends on the amount of members in the vocal group:

  • Ensembles up to 8 people – 1000 rubles
  • Ensembles and choirs up to 9 and 15 people – 1500 rubles
  • Ensembles and choirs up to 16 and 25 people – 2000 rubles
  • Ensembles and choirs from 26 and over – 2500 rubles

 

7.2 Coverage of all expenses relating to participants of the competition, supervisors, directors, accompanists and all accompanying personas, during the stay in Kazan is the responsibility of the Competition participants themselves or by releasing organizations. Directors of vocal groups taking part in the scientific conference “Readings In Memory of S.V. Smolensky. The Singing culture of Russia: XIX – XXI centuries”, comply with the general financial conditions of the conference. 

7.3 The Organizing Committee does not offer dormitory residence for the Festival participants. Booking of hotels is done by the participants of the Competition individually (please see the list of hotels recommended by the Organizing Committee in the Appendix №2).

 

 

  1. Condition for Participation in the Concerts of the Festival

8.1. Concert participants may be:

  • Church choirs and ensembles;
  • Student choirs and ensembles;
  • Amateur choirs and ensembles;
  • Professional choirs and ensembles;

8.2. The schedule of concerts of the vocal groups is compiled by the Organizing Committee after the receipt of all applications. 

8.3. Vocal groups have the possibility to take part in the concerts according to the schedule of the Festival (Appendix №1).

 

  1. Concert Program Requirements for Vocal Groups

 

9.1 The program of the group should comply with the objectives and tasks of the Festival.   

9.2 The program of each vocal group, in length and repertoire, is determined by the Organizing Committee individually (the length of the program – up to 20 minutes of actual time). 

- It is not permitted to perform with a recorded accompaniment (full or partial).

9.3 It is not allowed to perform the following sacred texts: «World’s Mercy», «We Sing to You», «Cherub’s Song».

9.4 Programs performed for the competition and concert should not overlap. 

 

  1. Financial Conditions for the Participants of the Competition

  1. Deadlines and Application Form for the Participants

 

11.1. Application for the participation in the competition and concerts of the Festival should be sent to the following electronic address: era.danilova@yandex.ru Era Danilova. Deadline: September 22, 2018.

11.2. Application form (in MS Word and JPEG/PDF formats):

  • Name of the vocal group and nomination (according to the Regulations of the Festival);
  • Name of the institution (address, telephone/fax); contact person’s telephone number;
  • Full name and title(s) of the vocal group’s director and accompanist;
  • Indicate either or both: «vocal group is taking part in the competition» / « vocal group is taking part in the concerts of the Festival»
  • The program of the competition (please, list the pieces in the order of performance at the Competition: full name of the authors of each piece and the full title of the piece; actual time of the piece);
  • Program of the concert performances (please, list the pieces in the order of performance at the Concert: full name of the authors of each piece and the full title of the piece; actual time of the piece);
  • The list of participants, directors and accompanying persons;
  • Stamped signature of the head of the institution (JPEG/PDF format).

The application should include a digital 10×15 photograph of the vocal group, no less than 300 dpi.
